Atama, who was born Andrew Ambrose but goes by the indigenous name given to him 12 years ago, likens his father, the late indigenous singer-songwriter Ambrose Mudi, to Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra.

Cubans will likely forever remember where they were when Fidel Castro's death was announced. Parties shut down and the bustling streets emptied after President Raul Castro, Fidel's 85 year-old younger brother, made the announcement on state television around midnight Friday. Unlike various occasions over the years, this time it was not a hoax: the man most Cubans grown up with as their country's leader had died.

Emerging artists are creating an eclectic selection of hip-hop, dubstep, electronic and rock music, with some influenced by traditional Egyptian sounds. The movement began in the mid-2000s as musicians bypassed record labels to reach their listeners directly via the web. It was boosted by Egypt's 2011 uprising which toppled longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak.
