Here’s another one from our recent Into The Cypress Swamps tour in Louisiana and Texas. These swamps are like a labyrinth, and there are many of them. When you’re in a kayak, any swamp is a great experience, but to get the most out of your photography, you really need to know where to go. Before we set up our first swamps tour, we spent two years scouting for the best locations. This is one of them. We spent an amazing afternoon here – especially during the last light, it was like paddling through a fairy tale. In this image, you see another one of our guests, Sai, dwarfed by the cypress trees. To get this perspective, I had to shoot from very far away, so I used my 80-400 zoomed in all the way to 400mm. – – – We have a few spots left on this year’s tour that will be led by Mr. Swamp himself, Georg Popp. His work from these swamps is famous around the world, and he even won an award with it in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. When Georg is in the swamp, Georg becomes the swamp. If you’ve ever seen the movie Swamp Thing – that’s basically Georg. We were the first company to run a 10-day kayak-based photography tour combining the swamps in Louisiana and Texas, and there is still no better-organized tour out there. Sea Mist At The Strand by Paul Killeen Photography
My last image made in 2019. This was sunrise on New Years Eve when I was please to find that the weather forecast was right and there was mist at Portstewart Strand. I am fond of the pastel tones throughout the image and also particularly fond of how the posts fade into the sea and mist.

Rick by Marsel van Oosten
Rick by Marsel van Oosten
This is Rick, floating through the cypress trees on our Into The Cypress Swamps photo tour in Texas and Louisiana. Of all the tours we run, this is by far the most therapeutic one. There’s not a single place I’ve been that calms me down and gently caresses my inner chi like these magical swamps. I took this hero shot of Rick on an early morning in Louisiana, while I was standing in the water in my fashionable waders. Too bad you can’t see that, because I really look good in anything. The conditions that morning were great, and we spent a lot of hours on the water – photographing and relaxing. Some people think it’s hard work to do this kind of photography, but it’s really not. If you’ve never paddled before, you might go in circles for a few minutes, but after that, it’s a piece of cake. Yes, there are alligators, but at this time of year, the water is quite cold, and they’re basically hibernating. And if you’re really terrified of them, you can also photograph from the safety of your kayak – many of our guests have done that successfully. If this is something you’d like to do, then you’re in luck: we have a few spots left on this year’s Into The Cypress Swamps tour: squiver.com [Nikon D5, AF-S VR 80-400/4.5-5.6. 1/125 @ f/16, ISO 800, Gitzo tripod] Marsel | squiver.com
