The Battles of Shadows and Light by José Ramos

Instagram/Facebook @joseramosphotography | Madeira Island is everything I was not expecting it to be before my first visit: wild, inhospitable, intense, vertiginous, dense, mesmerizing. As soon as you leave the densely populated areas, you immediately dive into an ancestral planet, filled with endless cliffs and steep slopes, surrounded by all sorts of details that capture your vision. At the end of each day, the dances of light create their usual magic, through a slightly predictable but always surprising pattern. If the West coast is usually bathed in luxurious and colorful sunsets, doubt is king on the Central Mountainous Massif, where its mountains dare to reach incredible heights, putting us right at the mercy of the whim of the Gods. At the opposite end of the Islands, in the Eastern located Ponta de São Lourenço area, winds usually become wild and intense mood swings are now the rule. In this rugged land, beyond its many interesting geological details, there is also a privileged viewpoint of the whole Island, where one can witness striking and memorable light phenomena, when the battle between shadows and light unfolds on top of the mountains. Location: Ponta de São Lourenço, Madeira Island (Portugal) Sony a7R + Laowa 10-18mm f4.5-f5.6 | Aperture: f11 | Exposure: 30 seconds | ISO: 50 | Manual focus | Remote shutter | Nisi 4 stops Medium Grad, Nisi 4 stops full ND | FLM tripod
